With this example I want to show you how you can present a family tree with missing people or incomplete information on the family tree. You can display so much generations – on this example is shown 16 generations.
Below you can read some tips so your family tree would look good and organized.
The most important the family tree is easy to read and easy to understand.
- Easy understanding I achieve by separating generations vertically. If you look at the example below, all people belonging to one generation are in the same vertical.
- Easy read the names is the most important thing in a family tree. We achieve that choosing the right font style and size and choosing the whole family tree poster size. When I need clear font on small size I choose a “Trajan Pro”. It’s very important to check how it looks in real size, so you can add the right font size (to be clear for reading when you print it).
Most of my past customers worried about the look of their family tree. They think that it will be “ugly”, “no symmetrical”, “ridiculous”, “incomplete”, “empty”, etc. My opinion is that every family tree can look good no matter what information we have/do not have.
Most of us can’t imagine what the family tree would look like until we see it. So I want to show you a couple of examples with all their shortcomings to see that the ugly family tree does not exist. Also incomplete or empty etc.
On this example customer wanted to look symmetrical, even if there are 13 ancestor generation on the left, but 11 generation on the right side. On the end her family tree looks like butterfly. She was really satisfied with her family tree on the end.
On this example I didn’t show missing people, I added just those I have the info for. On that way I created the space for really much generations. There are not crowd even with more then 100 names that I added on this family tree. All is clear and organized, generations are separated vertically. Customer wanted the 40×30 size, but it will be clear for reading on double smaller size too.
Below is another example with less generations, but with more people. The vertical organization is even clearer here. This customer had a lot of info that wanted to add in the family tree. So each name box contains:
- name, middle name, surname
- birth date and place
- death date and place
- marriage date and place
The result is beautiful, all is clear and simple for understanding. On gathering the info for this family tree one man worked with their parents for 20 years!
This was a gift from that man for his father.
