Which programs to use to fill a blank family tree
If you want to fill in your family tree on yourself, but you are not sure which programs you can use, or you must have experience to do it, I will write short guidelines for you below.
YOU CAN ADD THE NAMES ON YOUR COMPUTER USING TEXT BOXES IN:
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Illustrator
- Adobe Reader or Adobe Reader Pro DC
- Any other software where you can upload a PDF or a JPG file and add the text boxes for the names.
- — This applies to JPG files and non-fillable PDF files.

THE LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE YOU NEED
- If you fill the family tree with horizontal text boxes (as on the picture above), you can do it easy, using text tool an the program you choose. You don’t need experience to do that.
Bonus advices:
- You can write the names with a bigger font than the info about birth/death dates and place. On this way the names will be highlighted and whole family tree will looks more clearly.
- When you create one name and the other info (dates/place), you can duplicate it (copy and paste) for another names, so you don’t need to set up font style for all names over and over again.
2. If you fill the family tree with a round (curved) text (as on the picture above) you can do it in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I will write below about working in Adobe Photoshop, because I have the best experience with it.
- The first you need to create the round path and then you can write the round text
- This is the video that you can watch to understand how to do this (watch it from 1:30)
- You can apply here too my advice to create one name and the other info (dates/place), then duplicate it (copy and paste) for another names. On this way you don’t need to set up font style for all names over and over again.
FILLABLE FAMILY TREE
If you have a fillable PDF file of your family tree, just upload it into Adobe Reader (or Adobe Reader Pro DC), click on the name box that you want to fill and write the name.

FILL IN BY HAND
If you don’t have those programs, or you have difficulties to use it, give your personal touch and fill in by hand.
- This way is not so popular today. People think they don’t have good enough handwriting. You can try, maybe you will be surprised with the result.
- You can write with a pencil first, to see how it looks, which size suits to the longest names etc.
